Charity

Freemasonry is not a charity organisation, such as Lions or Rotary.  Whilst Lodges do support registered charities, it is not the main purpose of the organisation.  However, throughout its history Freemasons have given to those needing assistance.  Freemasons still practise this virtue of charity, whether through charitable donations or physical charity work.

Through the International body we support SPES an international charity established by members of the Supreme Council. "Spes", a Latin word meaning hope is also an acronym for "Soutien Pour l'Enfance en Souffrance" (Support For Suffering Children).

At each Lodge meeting a collection is held for charitable causes.  From these collections a portion is sent annually to The Central
Benevolent Fund from which assistance can be rendered to brethren in the South African Federation.
